How-to
Turn your next layover into a day trip
A long connection isn't dead time — it's a free stop. Here's how to plan a tight, walkable half-day without stress.
A six-hour layover feels like punishment. But strip out the airport dwell time and you've often got three good hours in a city you'd never have visited on purpose — Reykjavík, Doha, a small US hub with a surprisingly good downtown. The trick is planning a loop tight enough that you're never sweating the clock.
Start from the airport, not the city center
Most guides drop you in the middle of a place and let you wander. On a layover that's backwards — your fixed point is the airport, and every minute counts against your gate time.
In WHRNXT, open the arrival city and check the transit tab first. You want to know your realistic way in and out before you fall in love with a museum that's 40 minutes each way.
Rule of thumb: don't leave the airport unless you'll have at least 90 minutes on the ground after transit both ways. Below that, grab a good meal landside and call it a win.
Build a loop, not a list
Pick two or three stops that sit near each other, then let the planner order them:
- Add the stops in the city you're passing through.
- Tap Optimize — WHRNXT chains them into the shortest walking order.
- Set your last stop back near the station or airport express, so you end pointing home.
The whole plan lives on a single share link, so a travel companion can open the exact same loop without installing anything.
Leave margin at the end
Traffic, a slow line, a train that doesn't come — layover plans die at the back end, not the front. Cut your last stop before you think you need to. A calm walk back beats a sprint through security every time.
Passing through somewhere soon? Open WHRNXT, search the city, and see what's within reach.
